IGP reaffirms commitment to combat transnational crime

Abuja, Nigeria – April 30, 2025–On April 29, 2025, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment.

During his meeting with Lord David George Hanson from the UK’s Home Office, he emphasized the importance of international collaboration in fighting transnational crime. He pointed out that effective cooperation between countries is essential to address complex criminal networks operating across borders. Furthermore, he stressed that joint efforts can lead to more successful outcomes in dismantling these criminal organizations.

By working together, nations can share intelligence, resources, and strategies to enhance their overall effectiveness. Ultimately, he advocated for stronger international partnerships to combat the pervasive issue of transnational crime effectively.

The meeting occurred at the Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, in Abuja, emphasizing Nigeria’s dedication to collaborative security efforts.

During the visit, Lord Hanson emphasized the serious threat posed by transnational crime, especially fraud, which remains a critical concern for Nigeria and the UK.

He underscored the importance of ongoing UK-Nigeria collaboration in fighting cybercrime, expressing optimism that this partnership will grow stronger in the future.

Furthermore, Lord Hanson highlighted their current partnership and expressed his desire to formalize it through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

He believed that signing the MOU would deepen cooperation and provide a clear framework for intensified efforts against cybercriminals on both sides.

The IGP welcomed Lord Hanson’s remarks and stressed that the visit played a vital role in strengthening Nigeria-UK partnership.

He also expressed gratitude for the support extended to Nigerian law enforcement, particularly the NPF, in their fight against crime.

“Strengthening partnerships and collaborations with relevant organizations is crucial in our fight against crime.

We are committed to bringing crime to its barest minimum,” Dr. Egbetokun remarked.

He also expressed hopes for establishing a fellowship exchange program with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).

This program aims to foster a deeper, long-term relationship while enhancing collaborative efforts between both nations.

The meeting marks a significant milestone in Nigeria-UK dialogue on transnational crime. Both parties recognize that cooperation is essential in addressing criminal networks operating across borders effectively.
