ABUJA, Nigeria — Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu has declared that he would ban all tinted vehicles across Nigeria if he had the power to do so, citing security concerns and the misuse of tinted glass permits by criminals.
Disu made the remarks in Abuja on Tuesday while responding to concerns raised by Afam Osigwe, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), regarding the renewal and commercialisation of tinted glass permits. The NBA president had expressed concerns over the process, questioning the transparency and efficiency of the permit system.
The IGP acknowledged the NBA’s concerns and described tinted vehicles as a significant security challenge, noting that criminals often use them to evade detection and commit crimes. He argued that tinted windows make it difficult for security agencies to identify occupants and respond to potential threats.
“I would ban all tinted vehicles nationwide if I had the power,” Disu said. “Tinted vehicles are a security risk. They are used by kidnappers, armed robbers, and other criminals to hide their identities and activities. We need to take decisive action to address this problem.”
Disu also addressed the issue of permit renewal and commercialisation, stating that the police force is working to streamline the process and eliminate opportunities for corruption. He assured the NBA that the police would review the current system to ensure it is transparent and fair.
The IGP’s comments have generated mixed reactions from the public, with some Nigerians supporting the proposed ban and others expressing concerns about its impact on privacy and personal freedom. Supporters argue that the ban would enhance security and reduce crime, while opponents contend that it would infringe on individual rights.
