’I’ll Form a New Party’ — Elon Musk Declares War on Trump’s GOP

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is once again at the centre of political controversy after issuing a bold threat to form a new political party in response to President Donald Trump’s latest spending bill.
On Monday, June 30, 2025, as the U.S. Senate moved closer to voting on what Trump calls his “Big, Beautiful Bill,” Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) with a blunt warning to Republican lawmakers.
“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!
They will lose their primary next year if it’s the last thing I do on this Earth.”
Shortly afterward, Musk raised the stakes by declaring that if the bill is passed, “the America Party will be formed the next day.”
The billionaire entrepreneur says it’s time to break from the traditional two-party system.
“Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE,” Musk added.
Trump Responds with Personal Attack on Musk
President Trump responded on his social media platform Truth Social, accusing Musk of hypocrisy and dependency on government subsidies.
“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history… No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production.
Maybe DOGE should take a hard look at this. BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!”
Trump referenced the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a fictional-sounding agency intended to review wasteful government programs, suggesting it should investigate Musk’s companies.
A Growing Rift: From Allies to Adversaries
Musk and Trump were once political allies. Musk donated over $275 million to Trump-aligned Republican candidates during the 2024 election and briefly served as a White House adviser.
However, their alliance appears to have deteriorated sharply.
Earlier this month, Musk openly criticized the spending bill and floated the idea of starting a new party.
On Monday, he branded America a “one-party country the PORKY PIG PARTY,” arguing the bill increases national debt while ignoring the needs of average citizens.
What’s in Trump’s Spending Bill?
The legislation in question could add nearly $3.3 trillion to the U.S. deficit over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
It includes deep tax cuts and corporate subsidies while rolling back support for green energy initiatives.
A House version of the bill is estimated to add $2.4 trillion over the same period.
Although Musk has insisted he’s not opposing the bill out of self-interest, it cuts many clean energy credits and EV subsidies policies that have historically benefited Tesla and SpaceX.
“The bill gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future,” Musk said on X.
Trump Defends Anti-EV Mandate Stance
In a separate Truth Social post, Trump defended his policy position on electric vehicles (EVs), pushing back against suggestions that he’s targeting Musk.
“Elon Musk knew, long before he endorsed me, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate.
Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one.”
Musk Pledges to Back Primary Challengers
Musk, once a major donor, has threatened to financially back challengers to any lawmaker who votes for the spending bill.
His America PAC recently funded two Republican candidates in Florida special elections, a sign that his influence in GOP politics remains strong despite his growing frustration.
While Musk said in May that he would cut back on political donations, his Monday outburst indicates a reversal or at least a renewed interest in shaping the Republican Party’s future.
Is the “America Party” a Real Threat?
Though Musk has not filed paperwork to form a new party, political analysts are taking his comments seriously.
With vast personal wealth, a massive online following, and deep connections across the tech and business worlds, Musk could pose a genuine challenge to the current two-party dominance at least in select districts or states.
If the “America Party” moves beyond social media rhetoric, it could attract disillusioned independents, libertarians, and fiscal conservatives frustrated with both Democrats and Trump-era Republicans.
With the Senate preparing for a final vote, the stakes are high not just for U.S. fiscal policy, but for the future of conservative politics.
Elon Musk’s public break from Trump over government spending could signal a deeper fracture in the Republican coalition heading into the 2026 midterms.
Whether the America Party becomes reality or remains a warning shot, one thing is clear: Musk is no longer staying on the political side-lines.
