Illegal Levies, Hoes: Principals ordered to refund or face sack

Anambra govt ordered principals of public secondary schools to refund illegal levies including hoes, machetes from students or face disciplinary action

The Anambra state government has ordered principals of public secondary schools in the state to refund all illegal levies including hoes and machetes collected from students immediately or face disciplinary action.

This stern word of caution was dropped by the Chairman of Anambra State Post Primary Schools Services Commission,(PPSSC), Mrs Joy Ulasi at a joint management meeting with principals of schools held at the commission’s headquarters in Awka, yesterday (Monday).

The Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano had last month abolished certain taxes and levies in the state as a measure to cushion the effect of the economic downtown in the country on the citizens.

In a statement from the commission’s Public Relations Officer , Dr Felix Uzor, made available to journalists, the commission declared that “henceforth any principal whose act would constitute sabotage to Governor Obiano’s recession relief package would be removed …”

According to Uzor, “She directed the principals of all secondary schools in the state to refund to the students any levy collected without approval letter on or before Wednesday, October, 12.

Part of the statement read, “The chairman of Anambra State Post Primary Service Commission, Lady Joy Ulasi has announced ban on collection of machetes and hoes from any student in public secondary schools in the state for the next three years, as well as other items not expressly approved.

“Schools should make judicious use of the matches and hoes collected from students in previous years to do manual labour in schools.

PPSSC had earlier banned principals/teachers from collecting machetes and hoes from students for three years.

Also, the Association of Principals of Secondary schools in the state, through its spokesperson and President warned those he called “bad eggs” among the membership to desist from soiling the names of majority of the principals who had worked so hard to place Anambra tops on the academic map.
