Impeached Edo LG chairmen accused of disrupting state peace
DDM News

Former Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, Mr. John Mayaki, has urged the recently impeached local government council chairmen in Edo State to challenge their removal through the courts instead of creating disruptions in the state.
Addressing Diaspora digital media (DDM) and other journalists in Benin City, Mayaki cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo against making inflammatory statements that could destabilize the state’s political environment.
He emphasized that no amount of blackmail or slander would deter Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo from prioritizing the development and progress of the state.
Mayaki stated, “If local government legislators choose to impeach their chairmen, it is strictly their constitutional right.
This matter does not involve the governor.
The councilors, like the chairmen, belong to the PDP, while the governor is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor has no power to influence or prevent councilors in the state’s 18 local governments from exercising their constitutional authority.”
He further explained that local government councils, just like State Houses of Assembly and the National Assembly, are empowered by the constitution to impeach their leaders.
According to him, this process is legally sanctioned, and the appropriate response for the impeached chairmen is to contest their impeachment in court.
“I advise all impeached council chairmen to seek justice in courts of competent jurisdiction,” Mayaki said.
“This is the right course of action instead of causing disturbances and escalating tensions in the state.
Seeking legal redress is essential for resolving their grievances in a peaceful manner.”
Mayaki praised Governor Okpebholo for transforming Edo State into a hub of development and peace, adding that the governor is focused on delivering tangible progress to the people.
“Our governor has turned the state into a construction site, implementing transformative projects and enhancing the quality of life for Edo citizens.
The PDP must realize that no amount of smear campaigns will derail this progress or diminish the governor’s commitment to his divine mandate,” he added.
He concluded by urging all parties involved to refrain from actions that could disrupt the state’s peace and development, reiterating the need for the rule of law to prevail.
Seeking legal redress remains the best option for resolving disputes in a democratic society.
