The Adamawa state Chairman of National Union of Teachers (NUT),Comrade Nathan Rodney chronicled a story during a peaceful demonstration in Yola that in 1994 the then government were unable to settle salaries of Primary school teachers for the period of 17 months and do not want that experience to repeat itself.
Nathan is therefore calling the attention of the present administration under the leadership of Senator Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla Bindow to clear all outstanding salaries arrears to avoid a strike action by the workers.
The teachers who are owing the state government three months salaries arrears insisted that if local government must be given autonomy, teachers should be remove from local government and merged with either state or federal government or be given their autonomy through the restoration of the National Primary Education Commission (NPEC) to handle teachers salaries.
“Teachers are nation builders, if our welfare is toyed with the society is under threat,” Rodney said.
In their respective responses, Gov. Bindow and Speaker Mijinyawa lauded the teachers for their peaceful conduct and promised to act accordingly on their request in regard of council autonomy.
”For very Long time my government had set up a community that will fine tune a lasting solution to the salaries problems of all the LGAs workers and I assured you of a solution soonest.
” We should all bear in our minds most of the problems this government is inherited and my governor is doing everything possible to have an end to the problem and make Adamawa state Teachers the envy of all in the country. ” Bindow said
“I am one of the speaker that is a member of constitution review committee chaired by Deputy Senate President and I want to assure you that I will pass your message to the committee which will meet in two weeks time.
“I will also pass it to my colleagues who are stakeholders in the constitution review exercise”, Mijinyawa said
The Teachers matched to Government House and State House of Assembly where they delivered letters containing their position to the Governor and the Speaker of Adamawa Assembly respectively.
Presenting the letters to the governor and Speaker respectively, the State chairman of Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Nathan Rodney said primary teachers should be given fair treatment because they are the blocks builders of Education.
