Indian bride kills husband on honeymoon

In a chilling twist to what began as a romantic honeymoon, 25-year-old Indian bride Sonam Raghuvanshi has been arrested for allegedly plotting the brutal murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their trip to Meghalaya.
The couple, married on 11 May in Indore, vanished on 24 May while on honeymoon in the scenic northeastern state.
A week later, Raja’s decomposed body was discovered in a gorge — his throat slit, valuables missing, and Sonam nowhere to be found.
What initially sparked fears of kidnap or double murder has now turned into an alleged premeditated crime.
Meghalaya Police confirmed on Monday, June 9, 2025, that Sonam surrendered at a police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, and was immediately arrested.
According to Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang, four men—three from Madhya Pradesh and one from Meghalaya—have also been arrested in connection with the case.
Authorities describe Sonam as the “main suspect”.
Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem revealed that the arrested men include individuals known to Sonam, including a man who worked in her office.
Responding to questions about a possible affair between Sonam and one of the accused, Syiem said,
“If you join the dots, it would seem like it,”
but insisted further questioning was needed for confirmation.
Before Sonam’s arrest, both families launched a nationwide campaign demanding justice.
They petitioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and met influential caste and federal leaders, alleging the Meghalaya police were not doing enough.
Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, defended her innocence, insisting his daughter had “escaped captors” and had called her brother from a roadside dhaba in Ghazipur to seek help.
Singh claimed the Meghalaya police were fabricating the narrative and demanded a federal investigation led by Home Minister Amit Shah.
But the tide has turned. Raja’s brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi—who earlier dismissed Sonam’s involvement—now says the police may have been right all along.
“Only Sonam can clarify. If she’s guilty, she should be punished,” he stated, acknowledging that one suspect was from her workplace.
As the investigation unfolds, questions about motive remain unanswered.
However, officials believe the killing was coordinated weeks in advance, with Sonam allegedly using her position and connections to plan the crime.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma praised Meghalaya’s police for cracking the case within seven days despite heavy criticism and public pressure.
“The truth has come out,” said Minister Alexander Laloo Hek, who slammed detractors for prematurely blaming the police and state government.
The murder has shocked the nation, triggering massive media coverage and sparking debate on domestic betrayal, honor, and justice.
The alleged honeymoon horror now promises to become one of India’s most sensational criminal trials in recent memory.
More developments are expected as Sonam and the four accused face interrogation and trial.
