The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has officially begun processing applications from groups seeking to become registered political parties in Nigeria.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the electoral body revealed that a total of 110 associations, including the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), have formally submitted their letters of intent to be recognised as political parties.

This development comes just a day after INEC publicly stated that ADA had not yet fulfilled the conditions required for registration.

However, in a fresh statement issued on Wednesday by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, ADA was included in the growing list of associations under review.

The statement revealed that as of Monday, 23rd June 2025, INEC had received 110 formal expressions of interest from various political movements and advocacy groups.

INEC disclosed that all but six of the applications have already been acknowledged, with the remaining six to be addressed before the week ends.

Professor Yakubu assured the public that all the submissions are being processed in accordance with the Electoral Act and the commission’s 2022 Regulations and Guidelines.

He further advised interested stakeholders and political actors to consult the official handbook on party registration, which is currently available on INEC’s website.

According to him, this document outlines in clear terms the procedures, documentation, and timelines required to successfully register a political party in Nigeria.

He emphasized that while INEC remains open to registering new political actors, all associations must comply with legal and procedural standards before approval.

Yakubu also reiterated the commission’s commitment to transparency and fairness in the registration process.

The development marks a significant step in preparations for the 2027 general elections, which are expected to witness heightened political activity and increased citizen participation.

Several of the aspiring political groups are reportedly backed by former lawmakers, civil society coalitions, youth movements, and regional stakeholders.

Analysts believe that the eventual approval of new parties could reshape the political landscape by introducing fresh voices and platforms into Nigeria’s multiparty system.

With the growing discontent over governance and a yearning for alternatives, many citizens are watching the registration process closely.

INEC is expected to provide periodic updates as the screening and verification stages progress.
