INEC ends campaigns ahead of Edo guber poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially ended campaigns for the 2024 Edo governorship election.

This was disclosed in a statement by Mr Sam Olumekun, the spokesman of the electoral body on Thursday.

He reminded all political parties that, as stipulated by Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 12 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for this election, all campaign activities must cease by midnight of Thursday.

This means that from September 19, 2024, no political party in Edo State is permitted to conduct rallies, processions, or media campaigns.

The closure of campaigns is enforced under Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022, which includes provisions for penalties against violations.

On election day, Saturday, September 21, 2024, candidates and their supporters are also prohibited from appearing at polling units in campaign attire or with any campaign materials.

INEC however, urged all parties, candidates, and their supporters to adhere strictly to these legal requirements to ensure a smooth and orderly election process.
