Internet Usage In Nigeria Hits 1.24M Terabytes — NCC

(DDM) – Nigeria’s internet usage reached a new high of 1.24 million terabytes in late 2025, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The increase is largely attributed to the growing adoption of broadband services, mobile internet penetration, and expanding digital platforms across the country.

Officials said the surge reflects heightened demand for online services, including e-commerce, social media, streaming, and remote work applications.

The NCC noted that broadband expansion has been a key driver, with improved network coverage and faster connectivity contributing to higher data consumption.

Analysts observed that the growth underscores Nigeria’s increasing reliance on digital infrastructure for economic, educational, and social activities.

Despite the record usage, regulators highlighted ongoing challenges, including network congestion in urban centres, limited rural connectivity, and rising subscription costs for some consumers.

The NCC emphasized the importance of continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure to sustain growth and meet future digital demands.

Experts said Nigeria’s data consumption trend mirrors global shifts towards digitalisation, with streaming, online education, and fintech services driving significant traffic.

Mobile network operators reported increased traffic on both 4G and emerging 5G networks, contributing to the overall surge in internet usage.

The NCC encouraged stakeholders to adopt strategies that improve network resilience, enhance cybersecurity, and promote equitable access to broadband services nationwide.

Industry observers noted that while urban areas experience high data demand, rural communities remain underserved, highlighting the need for targeted connectivity initiatives.

Regulators also stressed the necessity of public awareness campaigns to ensure responsible internet usage and reduce digital exclusion.

The record data consumption demonstrates Nigeria’s growing position as a leading digital hub in Africa, reflecting rapid adoption of online technologies across sectors.

Experts said continued policy support, investment incentives, and innovation are vital to maintain momentum and address infrastructure gaps.

The NCC further highlighted that as internet penetration increases, data affordability and quality of service must remain priorities for sustainable growth.

Analysts predicted that with the expansion of broadband and digital literacy programs, Nigeria’s internet usage will continue to rise in the coming years.

Stakeholders called for collaboration between regulators, operators, and civil society to ensure that the benefits of digital growth are inclusive and sustainable.

DDM notes that continued monitoring of network performance and strategic investments in infrastructure will be crucial to maintain reliable internet access nationwide.
