Iran has denied claims by United States President Donald Trump that Tehran asked Washington to refrain from carrying out fresh military strikes, describing the allegation as false.
In a report published on Sunday, Iran’s Mehr News Agency, quoting military officials, said the country never made such a request and accused Trump of spreading misinformation.
According to the officials, Iran’s armed forces remain on high alert and are fully prepared to respond to any security threat.
Trump had stated on Saturday that although the US was prepared to launch fresh attacks on Iran, Tehran and several Middle Eastern countries had appealed to him to suspend military action.
He added that any restraint would depend on reaching an agreement with Iran.
The US president also said a potential deal would require the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the complete elimination of what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
However, Iran’s Fars News Agency, citing a source close to the country’s negotiating team, insisted that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed as long as the United States continued what it called hostile actions against Iran.
The strategic waterway has remained under Iranian blockade since the conflict began, with ships reportedly required to obtain permission and pay transit charges before passing through the strait.
