Iran has executed man for killing a police officer who was run over by a vehicle during clashes four years ago, the judiciary said on Sunday.

According to the judiciary’s Mizan Online website, the death sentence on the killer of Reza Ehterami has now been carried out.

Ehterami was a third lieutenant in the police emergency unit.

Prosecutor Aref Akbari gave the details.

Akbari said the execution followed an investigation and a trial. The Supreme Court also upheld the verdict.

The defendant, known in court as “Danial”, was convicted of intentionally killing Ehterami in the southern city of Bandar Abbas.

How the police officer died
Ehterami died in 2022 during clashes between police and fuel smugglers.

According to earlier state media reports, the defendant ran him over with a vehicle.

Rise in executions across Iran
Meanwhile, the country has stepped up executions since the Middle East war began in February.

It has also done so since anti-government protests erupted late last year.

Rights groups, including Amnesty International, say Iran executes more people each year than any country except China.

The authorities impose capital punishment for several offences, including murder.

Fuel prices in oil-rich Iran, however, remain among the lowest in the world. As a result, smuggling to neighbouring countries is widespread.
