Iran executes senior spy

Iran has executed two men one accused of spying for Israel’s Mossad and the other of belonging to the Islamic State (IS) as the country ramps up its internal crackdown amid growing geopolitical tensions.

According to Iran’s judiciary news agency, Mizan, one of the men, identified only as Vadi, was allegedly recruited online by Israeli intelligence and met with Mossad officers five times in Vienna, Austria.

He reportedly worked within one of Iran’s “important and sensitive organisations” and was charged with committing a “wide range of crimes” threatening both internal and external national security.

The second man, Mehdi Asgharzadeh, was accused of being an IS member who underwent military training in Syria and Iraq before illegally entering Iran.

Authorities say he was part of a four-member terror cell that engaged in armed conflict with Iranian security forces, resulting in the deaths of his accomplices.

Iran’s Supreme Court upheld the verdicts issued by lower courts, and officials insist all legal procedures were followed before carrying out the executions.

Spike in Iran’s Execution Rate

These latest executions are part of a broader wave of punitive measures by Iranian authorities, particularly following Israel’s reported covert operations targeting Iran’s nuclear programme.

In June, Israel’s ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, said Israeli strikes had killed at least 14 Iranian physicists and engineers in what he described as a 12-day war aimed at sabotaging Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Since then, Iran has intensified its internal security measures, including mass arrests and a notable rise in executions.

At least seven individuals have been hanged in recent months for alleged espionage linked to Israel.

Last year, Iran carried out at least 901 executions the highest number since 2015 according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In a recent report, Amnesty International stated that nearly 700 people have already been executed in Iran this year alone. The organization has called on Iran to halt all planned executions and to impose an official moratorium on the death penalty.

Global Reactions and Concerns

The surge in executions has drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups, especially amid fears that Iran’s judiciary is being weaponized to suppress dissent and silence opposition, including protesters linked to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement.

Observers say the current climate reflects Iran’s efforts to demonstrate strength and deter internal unrest while also responding to what it sees as ongoing foreign interference and threats to its sovereignty.
