Iran to respond to US proposal on Strait of Hormuz after review

Iran has said it will respond to the United States through intermediaries after completing its review of Washington’s response to Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei disclosed this on Monday, October 12, 2026, during a press conference.

Baghaei said Tehran was still examining the US response and continued to exchange messages through intermediaries, including countries involved in efforts to end the conflict.

Qatar and Pakistan have played mediation roles in diplomatic efforts to resolve the war, which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.

Iran submitted its proposal in mid-September after an interim ceasefire announced in June collapsed and attacks resumed. Tehran later confirmed receiving Washington’s response, but negotiations have since stalled.

Iran’s security chief said on Sunday that the US response did not adequately address Tehran’s seven conditions for reopening the strategic waterway and resuming negotiations.

A major point of disagreement is Washington’s insistence that Iran’s nuclear programme be addressed from the beginning of negotiations.

Tehran, however, wants discussions to initially focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring security in the waterway.

Before the war, the strait carried about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, making it a critical route for international energy supplies.

Meanwhile, Baghaei reiterated Iran’s willingness to support diplomatic efforts to resolve the escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, an ally of Tehran.

He said Iran supported an agreement reached through dialogue between Yemenis and Saudi Arabia, adding that the crisis should be resolved through peaceful negotiations.
