‘Irresponsible and Reckless’ — China Blasts US over UNESCO Exit

China has strongly condemned the United States over its latest decision to withdraw from UNESCO. The move, according to Beijing, undermines global cooperation and responsible leadership.

Diaspora Digital Media reported that on Tuesday, July 22, US officials announced the country would quit the UN cultural agency once again.

They accused UNESCO of promoting anti-Israel bias and divisive agendas. The withdrawal is expected to take full effect by December 2026.

However, China wasted no time in reacting, as the  Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said, “This is not the behavior of a responsible major country.”

Furthermore, he reaffirmed China’s continued support for UNESCO. “We have always backed UNESCO’s role in education, science, and culture,” Guo emphasized.

Importantly, this marks the third time the United States has walked away from the organization. President Ronald Reagan first withdrew in 1984.

Then, in 2017, President Donald Trump pulled out once again. Although President Joe Biden restored US membership in 2023, the current administration now plans to exit again.

In addition, Guo criticized the US for repeatedly failing to pay its dues. “The US has long refused to fulfill its financial obligations to UNESCO,” he said.

Moreover, he warned that this pattern damages multilateralism.

“We urge all nations to recommit to international cooperation and support the UN-centered global system,” Guo stated.

Notably, this is not the only global institution the US has abandoned. Under Trump, the US also exited the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Accord.

At the same time, his government imposed trade tariffs on many allies.

Meanwhile, China has positioned itself as a defender of global collaboration.

According to Guo, Beijing remains fully committed to the UN and its institutions.

UNESCO, which is famous for designating World Heritage Sites, also promotes scientific innovation and cultural diversity.

Therefore, China views it as essential to global development.

Critics argue that the US withdrawal could destabilize UNESCO and weaken trust in American leadership.

On the other hand, China may now gain more influence by filling the leadership gap.

Ultimately, Guo made it clear. China will continue backing the United Nations and encourage others to stay committed to global cooperation.
