Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have killed two suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters attempting to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along a key highway in Borno State.

The incident occurred on the Trans-Timbuktu corridor, stretching toward the Katarko-Goniri axis on Monday.

According to security expert, Zagazola Makama, troops while acting on credible intelligence, launched an ambush and engaged the suspects in a brief firefight.

“Acting on credible intelligence regarding the movement of a terrorist IED-laying team, the troops launched an ambush along the route.

“During the encounter, the soldiers engaged the terrorists in a brief but fierce firefight, killing two insurgents while others fled the scene,” a security source said.

Two AK-47 rifles, loaded magazines, a motorcycle, and IED construction materials were seized.

Also discovered were tools used to cut through tarred roads, typically employed to conceal explosives beneath the surface.

The military source noted that the swift and precise response by the troops not only averted a potential attack on both military and civilian vehicles but also secured a vital supply route frequently targeted by insurgents.

Troops have intensified patrols and route clearance missions to prevent further attempts by terrorists.
