A police outpost in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State was attacked early Wednesday by suspected members of the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP), leaving one officer dead.
The assailants reportedly arrived around 1:30 a.m., approaching the station on foot before launching a 45-minute assault marked by sporadic gunfire.
During the attack, they burned two patrol vehicles, opened the station’s cells, and made away with another patrol vehicle.
A security source described the operation as “silent,” adding that intelligence reports suggest ISWAP fighters are regrouping in neighboring Yunusari Local Government Area, specifically in Sukdu, Buhari, Mattati, and Bulabulin. SP Dungus Abdulkarim, spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers may have targeted the outpost to seize vehicles. “We are still investigating the matter,” he added.
This attack is part of a broader wave of violence across Nigeria. Just last week, terrorists killed several soldiers, Civilian Joint Task Force members, and a Brigadier-General.
On Monday, bandits stormed Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Kebbi State, killing a staff member and abducting 25 students. Two days later, gunmen attacked a church in Kwara State, killing worshippers and kidnapping 30 people.
In response to these escalating attacks, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris announced that President Bola Tinubu has placed all security agencies on “highest alert” to address the growing insecurity.
