It’s a stupid step to get married — Chike

Nigerian singer and songwriter Chike Osebuka, famously known as Chike, has revealed that marriage is not on his radar at the moment, calling it a “stupid step” in his personal opinion.

The 32-year-old artist, celebrated for his soulful and love-themed tracks, made this candid remark during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo.

When asked about his plans to settle down, Chike was straightforward: “In my personal opinion, I think it’s a stupid step to get married. That’s my opinion.”

Despite his reputation for romantic ballads, he explained that his happiness is tied more to financial stability than to marriage.

“For me to be happy, to be honest, I need a lot of money. This is not even carnal. I won’t lie to you, I like money. I want money”, he added.

While reflecting on his career journey, Chike shared that pursuing music as a profession wasn’t always the plan.

It wasn’t until after completing university that he realized music could be his calling.

“Maybe right after my university, I knew music is what I’ll do for a living. Before then, I just used to sing and disturb everybody around me” he admitted.

Chike also opened up about the financial struggles he faced early in his career, revealing that he had to take acting jobs for two years just to make ends meet.

He recalled a particularly emotional moment when he struggled to raise ₦400,000 to stage his first show. Some friends, who he thought would support him, ignored his calls.

“I just thought I deserved the respect of being told no, but some of them just stopped picking my calls”, he said.

Amid this disappointment, he said a female friend offered him much-needed support, both financially and emotionally.

“For the first time, I let out emotions, and I remember I cried that day. She just looked at me and said, ‘Chike, don’t worry, I’ll give you the money, just go and concentrate.’ That’s how the show happened”, he recounted with gratitude.

Chike’s music career formally took off in 2015 after his participation in Project Fame, followed by his impressive run as the first runner-up on The Voice Nigeria in 2016.

Later that year, he released his debut single, ‘Fancy’, marking the beginning of his rise as one of Nigeria’s most soulful voices.

Through his journey, Chike has remained unapologetic about his priorities, choosing to focus on his career and financial growth rather than societal expectations of marriage.
