Ivory Coast Fashion Designers Break Into Global Market

Ivory Coast’s fashion industry is gaining stronger international attention as designers based in Abidjan take their creations beyond the country while choosing to keep their businesses and production operations at home.

The development is positioning Abidjan as an increasingly important fashion centre in Africa, with local designers combining traditional fabrics, craftsmanship and contemporary designs to attract international customers and celebrities.

One of the designers leading this movement is Loza Maléombho, whose work has gained recognition among some of the world’s biggest entertainers.

Maléombho’s international breakthrough came after Beyoncé’s stylist discovered her handmade designs on Instagram.

Following several years of communication, Beyoncé wore one of Maléombho’s black-and-white jackets featuring gold Baoulé mask clasps in the singer’s 2020 music video, “Already”.

The appearance exposed the Ivorian designer’s work to a global audience, with the video reaching about 70 million views on YouTube.

Rather than moving abroad after gaining international recognition, Maléombho has continued to operate from Abidjan.

Her decision reflects a growing approach among Ivorian designers who believe international success does not necessarily require relocating their businesses to Europe or the United States.

Instead, they are using global platforms, social media and international fashion events to bring attention to work produced in Ivory Coast.

DDM News reports that Maléombho has also dressed other international stars, including Beyoncé’s sister Solange Knowles and American singer Kelly Rowland.

Her designs frequently incorporate locally sourced materials and traditional African textiles.

Among the materials she works with are Baoulé pagne, Kita pagne and jute, which she transforms into modern pieces designed for an international audience.

The strategy is helping demonstrate how traditional African materials can be incorporated into contemporary luxury fashion without losing their cultural identity.

Another major name in the Ivorian fashion industry is Elie Kuame, who has spent years developing his fashion house in Abidjan.

Kuame has also built his reputation around African creativity and local craftsmanship.

About half of the fabric used in his work is reportedly made up of pagnes, reflecting the importance of traditional textiles to his collections.

His designs are produced through detailed sewing, beading and embroidery carried out by skilled workers in his workshop.

Kuame has also created the Born in Africa label as an alternative mark of excellence, while establishing Abidjan Fashion Week as a platform for designers to showcase their work.

The fashion event is part of a wider network of African fashion platforms that connect designers with buyers, media organisations and fashion enthusiasts.

For Kuame, building the industry from Ivory Coast remains an important part of his vision.

He has presented his work at fashion events in Paris and New York but has continued to operate from Abidjan.

The approach highlights a wider change taking place within Africa’s fashion industry.

For years, international recognition was often associated with designers moving their operations to major fashion capitals such as Paris, London, Milan or New York.

Ivorian designers are increasingly challenging that model by demonstrating that global visibility can be built from within Africa.

Social media has played an important role in making this possible.

Platforms such as Instagram allow designers to display their collections directly to international audiences without depending entirely on traditional fashion gatekeepers.

A designer operating from Abidjan can now attract the attention of stylists, celebrities, buyers and fashion publications located thousands of kilometres away.

This has created new opportunities for African fashion businesses to reach customers outside their domestic markets.

The growth of e-commerce is also expanding the potential customer base for African designers.

As more consumers become comfortable discovering and purchasing products online, fashion businesses can reach international customers without necessarily opening physical stores abroad.

This is particularly important for designers producing limited or handcrafted collections.

However, the growth of Ivory Coast’s fashion industry also highlights some of the challenges facing African fashion businesses.

The country, like many others on the continent, continues to import significant quantities of finished clothing, ready-to-wear products and second-hand garments.

This means that local designers are competing in a market where imported fashion products remain widely available.

Despite these challenges, the growing international reputation of Ivorian designers is creating opportunities for the industry to develop beyond consumption.

DDM News understands that fashion is increasingly being viewed as part of Africa’s creative economy and a potential source of employment, business development and international visibility.

The industry supports more than designers alone.

Tailors, textile producers, embroiderers, photographers, models, stylists, fashion retailers and other creative professionals can benefit when local fashion businesses expand.

The international success of Ivorian designers therefore has implications beyond individual brands.

It can help create demand for local skills and materials while encouraging younger creatives to consider fashion as a viable business opportunity.

Ibrahim Fernandez is another Ivorian designer attracting international attention.

His designs have been showcased in Paris, including at Galeries Lafayette during an event celebrating African fashion.

Fernandez has also dressed major music stars, including Youssoupha, Black M and Aya Nakamura.

In May, Nakamura wore a sparkling creation made by Fernandez and fellow Abidjan-based designer LaFalaise Dion.

The outfit, decorated with cowrie shells, pearls and gemstones, was worn by Nakamura during a concert at the Stade de France in front of more than 70,000 people.

Such appearances provide designers with international exposure while also placing Ivorian creativity in front of large audiences.

The growing visibility of these designers suggests that Ivory Coast is developing a stronger position within Africa’s expanding fashion economy.

The opportunity could become even bigger as African consumers and international buyers show greater interest in fashion that combines cultural identity with contemporary design.

For Ivorian designers, the challenge now is to convert international attention into sustainable businesses.

That means developing production capacity, improving access to finance, building distribution networks and finding ways to consistently serve customers outside the country.

Their decision to remain in Abidjan could also contribute to the development of the local fashion ecosystem.

Rather than exporting creative talent, the industry can retain designers, artisans and other skilled workers while connecting their businesses to international markets.

Ivory Coast’s fashion story is therefore becoming more than a story about clothing.

It is increasingly about how African creativity can become a commercial asset, create jobs and compete on the international stage without abandoning its roots.

With designers such as Loza Maléombho, Elie Kuame and Ibrahim Fernandez gaining global visibility, Abidjan is showing that international fashion influence does not always have to begin in Paris, Milan or New York.

For Ivory Coast, the growing recognition of its designers could mark the beginning of a larger opportunity to build a fashion industry that is locally rooted but globally connected.
