JUST IN: APC Dismisses Atiku’s Defection as No Threat to 2027 Dominance
says his defection lacks principle

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the potential political impact of Atiku Abubakar’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that it will not threaten the APC’s hold on power.
According to Mr. Seye Oladejo, the APC’s spokesperson in Lagos, Atiku’s decision to leave the PDP and possibly join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will not alter the political landscape leading up to the 2027 elections.
Atiku Abubakar officially announced his departure from the PDP on Wednesday, citing irreconcilable internal conflicts within the party as the primary reason for his resignation.
As the PDP’s presidential candidate in both the 2019 and 2023 elections, Atiku has long expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s lack of unity and failure to present a formidable opposition to the ruling APC.
While Atiku is not yet a formal member of the ADC, his political coalition has recently endorsed the ADC as their platform for the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
His resignation from the PDP signals an intent to strengthen his alliance with the ADC as he prepares for the next electoral cycle.
In response to Atiku’s exit, Oladejo characterized the move as both desperate and predictable, highlighting what he described as ongoing fragmentation within the opposition ranks.
He argued that the situation underscores the PDP’s continuing internal crisis and illustrates Atiku’s perceived inconsistency in political allegiance.
“Atiku’s decision demonstrates ambition that lacks principle.
“It is not guided by ideology but by a relentless personal quest for power,” Oladejo stated emphatically.
He further emphasized that this defection would neither enhance the ADC’s prospects nor weaken the APC’s political dominance, particularly in Lagos and across Nigeria as a whole.
Oladejo asserted, “Whether it’s the PDP, ADC, or any other party, Nigerian voters are politically savvy and will not be easily influenced by such shifts.”
The APC spokesman reiterated that the party remains the only political force delivering tangible governance, economic improvements, and infrastructural development.
He argued that Atiku’s move offers the electorate an opportunity to critically assess the integrity and consistency of those vying for leadership roles.
Oladejo also reaffirmed the APC’s dedication to fostering national unity, sustainable development, and purposeful governance.
He urged supporters in Lagos to stay united and actively engage at the grassroots level to secure victory in future elections.
“Success depends on our solidarity, track record of achievement, and commitment to people-focused development,” he noted.
Moreover, Oladejo warned that Atiku’s political maneuvers often bring instability and that Nigeria deserves leadership that is visionary rather than recycled.
“Nigerians deserve leaders with foresight, not theatrical political comebacks.
“The APC is ready to lead and win,” he concluded.
Reports also indicate that several opposition figures, including former members of both the PDP and the Labour Party, have recently aligned themselves with the ADC ahead of the 2027 polls.
This suggests that the opposition landscape is undergoing some realignment, although APC remains confident that these shifts will not significantly disrupt their electoral dominance.
In summary, the APC views Atiku Abubakar’s resignation from the PDP as a symptom of a fractured and weakening opposition rather than a threat.
The ruling party remains steadfast in its belief that its record of governance and development will continue to resonate with Nigerian voters.
As the country approaches the 2027 general elections, APC urges its supporters to remain focused on unity and grassroots mobilization to maintain political supremacy.
