A drone strike has hit a U.S.-owned floating gas storage tanker at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta, triggering a fire that spread to a second gas vessel, according to maritime security sources.
Maritime security firm Ambrey said on Wednesday that its preliminary assessment indicated a drone struck the floating storage tanker, Energos Winter, while it was berthed at the port.
Port services company Inchcape separately confirmed that two gas tankers caught fire at the Damietta terminal.
Shipping and trading sources familiar with the incident identified the second vessel as Gaslog Salem, saying the blaze spread from the Energos Winter after the initial impact.
Two security sources also confirmed that the explosion was caused by a drone strike.
The crew members aboard the affected vessels were safely evacuated, while firefighters succeeded in bringing the blaze under control, Ambrey said.
No casualties have been reported.
As of the time of filing this report, no individual or group had claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, where maritime assets and energy infrastructure have increasingly become targets as regional hostilities continue to escalate.
