The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a security alert warning of an alleged plot by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) to launch coordinated attacks in parts of Ondo and Kogi states.

In a confidential memo addressed to the Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, and signed by H. I. Kana on behalf of the State Director of Security, the DSS warned of “imminent attacks” and urged the Nigerian Army to intensify patrols and surveillance in vulnerable communities.

The letter, titled “Imminent Attacks in Ondo State by Members of ISWAP,” identified Eriti-Akoko and Oyin-Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, along with Owo town, as potential targets.

According to the DSS, credible intelligence confirmed that ISWAP operatives were planning coordinated assaults on communities in both states and had already begun monitoring soft targets.

“Intelligence confirmed plans by ISWAP members to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States anytime soon,” the agency stated, urging security forces to act swiftly.

The DSS called for proactive measures, community vigilance, and closer coordination among security agencies to prevent any attack.

Confirming the alert, Ondo State Police spokesperson, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, said the command had taken immediate steps in response to the intelligence. “That’s partly why we were in Akoko on Sunday. Everyone is taking steps to ensure no event takes us unaware,” Ayanlade assured.

The warning comes three years after the June 5, 2022, terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, which claimed 41 lives and left dozens injured. The DSS later arrested several suspects linked to ISWAP, who are currently facing trial at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Security experts have urged residents of affected areas to report suspicious activities and cooperate with authorities as the military and police intensify operations to forestall any attack.

The DSS memo underscores rising security concerns across the region, particularly with the resurgence of extremist networks targeting soft civilian populations.
