The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position amid reported moves by some lawmakers to impeach him.
Agbebaku’s media aide, Ivy Ebojele, confirmed the resignation in a Facebook post on Monday, saying further details would be released later.
The development comes amid growing political tension within the Assembly and reports that lawmakers were preparing to remove him.
Following his resignation, the Deputy Speaker, Jonathan Ibhamawu, reportedly presided over plenary, where Yekini Idaiyi, representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, emerged as the new Speaker.
Agbebaku had served as Speaker since June 2023 and defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in May 2025.
More details are expected to emerge on the circumstances surrounding his resignation and the new leadership of the Assembly
