JUST IN: FG Appoints KWAM 1 as Aviation Security Ambassador After Abuja Airport Drama

The Federal Government has appointed Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol.
This follows a recent controversy surrounding his conduct at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made the announcement on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
He said the decision formed part of resolutions to address increasing cases of unruly behaviour at Nigerian airports.
According to Keyamo, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) reduced KWAM 1’s flight ban from six months to one month after he showed remorse over the incident.
He explained that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will work directly with the Fuji star to promote awareness of acceptable conduct within the aviation sector.
“The NCAA will cut the ban to one month. FAAN will also partner with the music icon to engage him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol,” Keyamo stated.
He added that the NCAA will withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 after his public apology.
The minister revealed that this decision came after appeals from well-meaning Nigerians and organisations.
He stressed that KWAM 1’s public penitence played a major role in the government’s choice to grant clemency.
On August 5, KWAM 1 became embroiled in a heated confrontation with airline staff and security personnel while trying to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos.
Reports alleged that he carried a prohibited flask believed to contain alcohol.
Security officials claimed he spilled its contents on personnel before walking onto the tarmac and blocking the aircraft’s movement.
However, KWAM 1 later apologised to the public, explaining that the flask contained water for medical reasons and not alcohol as alleged.
He insisted that his actions had no intent to cause disruption.
Keyamo emphasised that while the government showed compassion in this case, it remained fully committed to enforcing aviation safety and security laws.
“We cannot compromise safety. Every passenger must follow security protocols,” he warned.
The initial sanction placed KWAM 1 on a six-month no-fly list and triggered a criminal complaint with the police.
However, after reviewing the case and considering his apology, the authorities opted for a softer approach.
With this new role, KWAM 1 is expected to work with FAAN to sensitise travellers on the importance of following aviation rules.
The ministry hopes his influence will help curb unruly behaviour at airports nationwide.
