At least four people were injured after a car ramming and stabbing attack outside a synagogue in Manchester on Thursday, police confirmed.
The incident took place at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Greater Manchester Police said they were alerted at 9:31 a.m. when a car was driven into members of the public and a man was stabbed.
Firearms officers responded quickly and shot the suspect at the scene.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was “appalled” by the attack and praised emergency services for their swift action.
“The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur makes it all the more horrific,” Starmer wrote on X, adding that his thoughts were with the victims and their families.
Starmer is cutting short his trip to Copenhagen, where he was attending a European security meeting, to chair a Cobra emergency committee session in London.
Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham described the incident as “serious” and urged people to stay away from the area.
Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, he expressed concern for the Jewish community, saying, “I can only imagine the fear people will feel hearing this news.”
Police and emergency services remain on the scene, while investigations continue into the motive behind the attack.
