Just in: Israeli lawmakers react to Iran ceasefire with mixed views

Israeli lawmakers have begun responding to the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, which officially went into effect on Tuesday.

Reactions vary across the political spectrum, with some officials praising Israel’s military gains and others urging a shift in focus to ending the war in Gaza.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the ceasefire follows 12 days of intense hostilities between Israel and Iran, marked by missile strikes and regional tensions.

Avigdor Lieberman, former defense minister and chairman of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, warned against complacency.

“There is nothing more dangerous than leaving a wounded lion behind,” Lieberman said, referring to Iran.

He applauded Israel’s “stunning military achievements” but expressed concern over what he described as a looming “difficult and exhausting negotiation process.”

Lieberman appeared skeptical of the ceasefire’s long-term durability and emphasized the need for continued vigilance.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid took a more conciliatory tone, suggesting the time had come to end the Gaza conflict.

“This is now the moment to close that front,” Lapid said. “To bring the hostages home, to end the war. Israel needs to start rebuilding.”

Lapid’s remarks reflect growing domestic pressure to pivot from external threats to internal recovery and civilian welfare.

Yair Golan, chairman of the Democrats, described the campaign against Iran as concluding with “a clear security achievement.”

In a post on X, Golan urged a detailed review of the ceasefire terms.

“Does it prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons?” he asked. “What sanctions, including the resumption of fighting, will be imposed if it is violated?”

Golan also echoed calls for ending Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

His statement aligns with a broader push among moderate lawmakers who believe the military objectives have been sufficiently met.

On the other hand, Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right finance minister, praised what he called “a crushing victory in the campaign against Iran.”

He declared that the conflict’s outcome “will be recorded gloriously in the pages of the history of the State of Israel.”

Smotrich said Israel had eliminated “an immediate existential threat,” and called for renewed military focus on Gaza.

“Now with all our strength to Gaza,” he urged, “to destroy Hamas and return our hostages.”

Smotrich’s comments reflect a hardline stance that sees the Gaza conflict as unfinished business, despite progress on the Iranian front.

The diversity of reactions highlights deep divisions within Israel’s political leadership on how to proceed in the aftermath of the ceasefire.

While some advocate diplomacy and reconstruction, others call for sustained military pressure on multiple fronts.
