The Kano State governor Abba Yusuf has officially nominated Murtala Garo as the next deputy governor of Kano State.

The governor sent Garo’s name to the State House of Assembly on Wednesday, asking lawmakers to screen and confirm him for the role.

The move was confirmed in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.

According to the statement, the nomination follows the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, which allows a governor to appoint a new deputy when the position becomes vacant.

That vacancy came after the former deputy governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, stepped down on March 27, 2026.

The governor explained that Garo’s nomination wasn’t a rushed decision. He said it came after consultations with key political stakeholders across the state.

Garo, 48, is described as a seasoned politician with more than two decades of experience in both elected and appointed roles. Over the years, he has served in several positions, including State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.

He also previously led the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano and served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. In the 2023 general elections, he was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The government says his nomination is part of a broader effort to strengthen governance and ensure the state continues to run smoothly.

Now, all eyes are on the Kano State House of Assembly, which will decide whether to confirm him for the position.
