The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of schools across five local government areas following rising security concerns in parts of the state.
The directive, announced on Thursday by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, affects schools in Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin, and Oke Ero local government areas under the Kwara South Senatorial District.
According to the commissioner, the measure is part of a broader security response aimed at safeguarding students amid fears that criminal groups fleeing intensified security operations may attempt to use schoolchildren as shields.
Dr. Olohungbebe said the government took the decision after reviewing intelligence reports and consulting security agencies.
He added that the closure includes boarding facilities in Irepodun LGA, which authorities believe could be attractive targets for bandits attempting to evade ongoing military and police crackdowns.
“This proactive measure underscores the commitment of the state government to protect schoolchildren and prevent criminals from exploiting educational institutions,” the commissioner said. “The directive takes immediate effect and will remain in place until further security clearance.”
Security sources told reporters that the closure follows increased monitoring of suspected movements of armed groups across state boundaries in recent weeks. Several communities in Kwara South have also reported suspicious activity, prompting reinforced patrols by security operatives.
Parents and school administrators have been advised to comply fully with the directive while the government continues to assess the situation.
The commissioner assured residents that authorities are working with federal security agencies to strengthen surveillance and maintain stability in affected areas.
The state government is expected to announce updated guidelines for reopening once security operatives certify the environment safe for academic activities to resume.
