(DDM) – Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed that both Harry Maguire and Mason Mount face late fitness assessments ahead of the club’s Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Amorim confirmed the uncertainty during his pre-match press conference on Friday, noting that both players picked up minor knocks following last weekend’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.
That match marked United’s first Anfield win since 2016, with Maguire scoring a decisive late header to secure back-to-back league victories for the Red Devils, their first under Amorim since his appointment last November.
However, the manager admitted that both Maguire and Mount have been undergoing medical evaluation throughout the week.
“The squad is fine, but we have some doubts,” Amorim said.
“We had some issues during the week with Harry Maguire and Mason Mount. Knocks, but nothing serious. We will see tomorrow. Licha [Lisandro Martínez] is out. The rest are ready for the game.”
Amorim acknowledged that the upcoming home match at Old Trafford will be a challenging encounter, praising Brighton’s fluid, attacking style under their current setup.
“I think it’s going to be a very difficult game,” he added.
“Brighton are a team that’s really fun to watch. They’re good on the build-up, strong on transitions, and very complete in every area of the game.”
“They’ve also improved on set pieces this season, so we need to be really smart and stay focused on every detail.”
Maguire, whose contract with United expires at the end of the season, is reportedly eager to prove his fitness and keep his place in Amorim’s starting lineup.
The England defender, signed from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019, has faced intense scrutiny in recent years but continues to deliver strong performances when called upon.
Amorim downplayed speculation about Maguire’s future, insisting that contract discussions were not a current priority.
“We are really happy with Harry,” the Portuguese coach said.
“It’s not the time to talk about that because it gives the idea that we’re thinking too far ahead. He’s really important for us, but we need to focus on the next game.”
Maguire has shown resilience in overcoming multiple setbacks, including being stripped of the club captaincy by former manager Erik ten Hag two years ago, a role later handed to Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes, meanwhile, is poised to make his 300th appearance for Manchester United this Saturday, an achievement Amorim praised with high admiration.
“I think he’s a little different from what I expected,” Amorim said of his compatriot.
“You can understand his frustration sometimes because he wants to help his teammates so much.”
“Every time we don’t win, he takes it personally, as a true captain should. He’s a great leader and a great footballer.”
With United currently sitting ninth in the Premier League table with 13 points from eight matches, Amorim’s focus remains on maintaining momentum as his side seeks a third straight victory.
The fitness status of Maguire and Mount will be crucial as United look to strengthen their position and continue building under their new manager’s leadership.
