(DDM) – The Organization of Igbo Communities has condemned the recent court judgment that sentenced the IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment.
The statement, obtained by Diaspora Digital Media DDM, was issued by the National President of OIC, Mazi Chukwuemeka Ukason Major.
The group described the ruling delivered by Justice Omotosho as a decision that falls short of democratic and judicial standards.
OIC said the judgment raises troubling concerns about transparency, fairness, and respect for the rule of law within Nigeria’s justice system.
It warned that the outcome threatens to weaken public trust in the courts at a time when national unity requires careful management.
The organization stated that Kanu’s case goes beyond one individual and carries widespread national and international implications.
It argued that any ruling capable of worsening ethnic tensions must be handled with exceptional responsibility.
The body expressed fear that the judgment could deepen the sense of marginalization felt by many Igbo communities across Nigeria.
OIC leaders stressed that justice must be seen to be impartial and must never be interpreted as a tool for political or ethnic suppression.
The group, however, strongly appealed for calm among supporters of Nnamdi Kanu and across all Igbo communities.
It urged citizens to avoid violence, confrontation, or retaliation of any form as tensions rise following the court ruling.
OIC confirmed that Kanu’s legal team has already initiated the appeal process.
The organization expressed confidence that the appeal will provide an opportunity to correct what it described as judicial inconsistencies surrounding the ruling.
It called on all supporters to show patience and trust in lawful procedures despite their disappointment.
The group also addressed the statements earlier issued by the President in reaction to the judgment.
OIC advised the President to adopt a more balanced, reconciliatory stance to prevent further division in the country.
The body insisted that Nigeria needs leadership that promotes unity and fairness rather than actions that may appear selective or inflammatory.
It noted that in moments of national tension, presidential language must be measured and inclusive.
The organization said communities across Nigeria look to the presidency for calm, not escalation.
OIC also reached out to the global community in its latest communiqué.
It called on international human rights groups, democratic governments, and regional justice institutions to closely monitor the ongoing appeal.
It urged them to ensure the case aligns with international human rights norms and global judicial standards.
The organization maintained that global oversight is necessary to guarantee transparency throughout the appeal process.
The group reiterated its commitment to peaceful advocacy and lawful engagement as it continues to champion the rights of Igbo communities.
OIC reaffirmed that its mission includes defending the dignity of the Igbo people without compromising national unity.
It pledged to maintain pressure for justice through nonviolent and democratic means.
The organization concluded by urging the global Igbo population to remain calm, united, and focused on pursuing justice responsibly.
It reminded followers that peace is essential for any meaningful national dialogue to take place.
It emphasized that the pursuit of justice must go hand in hand with civility for the sake of long-term stability.
