Justice or persecution? Ex-AGF Agabi joins Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team
DDM News

Nnamdi Kanu has reinforced his legal defense ahead of his upcoming trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) revealed that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has added new senior counsels to his already existing legal team.
Among the new additions is Kanu Agabi, a former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice.
Also joining the team is Uchenna Njoku, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) with extensive experience in high-profile cases.
Agabi, who served twice as Nigeria’s Attorney General, is expected to bring significant legal expertise to Kanu’s defense.
His appointment signals a strategic move to strengthen the legal battle against the Nigerian government’s charges.
Njoku’s inclusion further reinforces the defense team, which has been actively challenging Kanu’s prolonged detention.
Despite these new additions, Kanu has chosen to retain his existing legal representatives for continuity.
His current team includes Aloy Ejimakor, Maxwell Opara, and Nnaemeka Ejiofor, who have been handling his case.
The IPOB leader remains hopeful as he prepares for his next court appearance on Friday, March 21.
His trial has sparked national and international debates on human rights, justice, and political repression.
A major development in the case is the transfer of proceedings to a new judge.
Justice Binta Nyako, who previously presided over the matter, has stepped down following allegations of bias.
Kanu had accused Justice Nyako of favoring the prosecution in her rulings and requested a change of judge.
In response, Justice Nyako recused herself and returned the case file to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.
Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge, initially rejected requests to reassign the case to another judge.
However, a letter from Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, to the Chief Justice of Nigeria may have influenced the decision.
Following this, the case was reassigned to Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court 7.
The reassignment has raised speculations about whether Kanu will receive a fair trial under the new judge.
Observers believe the addition of high-profile legal figures could change the course of the trial.
Many IPOB supporters see the case as political persecution rather than a fair legal process.
The Nigerian government maintains that Kanu must face justice for his alleged crimes against the state.
The legal battle has drawn international attention, with human rights groups demanding a fair and transparent trial.
With the new legal team in place, Kanu’s defense is expected to mount a stronger challenge against the prosecution.
The upcoming court session will determine whether the new developments favor Kanu or prolong his legal troubles.
As tensions rise, the nation watches closely to see how the trial unfolds under Justice Omotosho’s leadership.
