JUST IN: Reps Move To Probe Edo–Delta Border Conflict

(DDM) – The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into renewed hostilities between border communities in Edo and Delta States, following reports of violent clashes that have disrupted peace in the region.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the decision came after a motion was raised by Hon. Billy Osawaru, representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwude Federal Constituency, during Tuesday’s plenary session in Abuja.

Osawaru warned that the persistent attacks, allegedly carried out by suspected Mosogar youths, could escalate into a full-blown interstate crisis if not swiftly addressed by relevant authorities.

He explained that the affected Edo communities, Iguelgba, Oben, Ikobi, and Obazogbe-N’ugu, had maintained peaceful coexistence with their Delta neighbors since 1991, until recent violent incursions disrupted the long-standing harmony.

According to him, the situation has left residents displaced, farmlands destroyed, and local economies paralyzed, with growing fears of retaliatory attacks across both state boundaries.

The lawmaker urged security agencies to intervene urgently, restore order, and prevent further loss of lives and property in the affected areas.

He also called on the Edo and Delta State governments to activate joint peace committees and prioritize dialogue over confrontation to resolve the lingering boundary dispute.

The House further mandated its Committees on National Security and Special Duties to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the crisis, engage community leaders, and report back with concrete recommendations.

Lawmakers across party lines supported the motion, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive investigation to identify the root causes and ensure justice for victims of the attacks.

They also cautioned that failure to resolve the matter could set a dangerous precedent for other border communities facing similar tensions across Nigeria.

Observers note that boundary conflicts between Edo and Delta States date back decades, often fueled by land disputes, resource control, and political rivalries.

Analysts believe that the National Boundary Commission must expedite the delineation of disputed areas to prevent further violence and foster lasting peace.

The motion’s adoption reflects growing concern among federal lawmakers over rising communal clashes nationwide, especially in border zones where unclear demarcations continue to fuel mistrust and instability.

The committees are expected to submit their findings to the House leadership within a stipulated timeframe for further legislative action.
