JUST IN: SDP Expels El-Rufai For 30 Years

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and banned him for 30 years.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, issued a statement on Monday confirming the decision.
According to the party, El-Rufai violated its constitution, manifesto, and values. He also breached the Electoral Act, which gives political parties full control over their membership.
The SDP warned the public and its members to avoid any dealings with El-Rufai. It declared that he no longer represents the party at any level or for any purpose.
The party also urged INEC and relevant institutions to take note of his non-member status. It ruled him ineligible for party membership until July 28, 2055.
The National Working Committee (NWC) said it reviewed El-Rufai’s conduct after reports from its Kaduna chapter. Despite clear evidence that he never registered, El-Rufai claimed to be an SDP member and promoted rival parties.
Initially, the party gave him the benefit of the doubt. As a former minister and governor, he was expected to know the implications of impersonation.
He even posted on social media that he had joined the SDP. That post attracted public congratulatory messages and even a support letter from the party’s publicity secretary.
However, upon investigation, the Kaduna SDP chapter proved right El-Rufai never registered at his ward.
The party said El-Rufai forged documents and falsely gave himself the title of “Number 001” in Unguwar Sarki Ward. It stressed that no such entry existed before his public claims.
Despite lacking membership, El-Rufai continued to use the SDP’s name at various events and political forums.
The NWC accused him of destabilizing the party and pushing a false agenda.
It also linked him to internal disunity, manipulation, and dishonest backdoor attempts to force the SDP into a political coalition.
El-Rufai reportedly sought photo ops with suspended chairman Shehu Musa Gabam and others to boost his false claims
The NWC accused him of sponsoring an illegal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 25, 2025.
It added that during his time as Kaduna governor under the APC, El-Rufai persecuted SDP members. His actions, the party claimed, showed a long-standing intolerance for opposition.
The statement listed several “unforgivable sins,” including:
- Forging SDP registration documents.
- Declaring membership without ward-level approval.
- Promoting a coalition agenda with ADC.
- Creating confusion within the party ranks.
- Attempting to hijack the party through bribery and deceit.
The SDP stated that all actions were taken under its 2022 amended constitution, especially Articles 19.1, 19.3(i), and 19.5.
The party officially excommunicated El-Rufai from its structures at every level local, state, national, and international.
He is banned from identifying with the SDP, donating to it, or participating in its activities for 30 years.
The statement closed with a reaffirmation of SDP’s core values: party discipline, honesty, ideological clarity, and national service. The party welcomed sincere Nigerians who support its mission to fight corruption, poverty, and insecurity without shortcuts.
