The Anambra State Government has arraigned eight clerics before a court over allegations of fraudulent religious activities and violations of the state’s Homeland Security Law, as Governor Chukwuma Soludo intensifies his campaign against what he describes as religious exploitation.

The accused persons were brought before the court on Thursday following investigations by the state government into activities allegedly linked to deceptive religious practices.

The prosecution is being handled by the Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke.

Those standing trial are Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.

Their arraignment follows a series of enforcement actions launched by the Soludo administration against individuals accused of using religion as a means of exploiting members of the public through false promises and misleading claims.

Speaking recently in Awka, Governor Soludo said some of the suspects had already been questioned by investigators and were assisting with ongoing inquiries.

According to him, preliminary findings uncovered what he described as a network of activities designed to take advantage of vulnerable people seeking solutions to personal, financial and social challenges.

The governor criticised teachings that promise instant prosperity and miraculous breakthroughs without accountability, describing them as practices that mislead desperate citizens.

He said the prosecution forms part of his administration’s broader effort to build a society founded on integrity, accountability and responsible leadership.

Soludo also urged religious and political leaders to play active roles in promoting ethical values and discouraging practices that encourage the pursuit of quick wealth at the expense of honesty and hard work.

According to him, genuine societal progress can only be achieved when leaders uphold truth, responsibility and moral discipline.

The case is expected to test the implementation of Anambra State’s Homeland Security Law and could shape future government actions against individuals accused of using religious platforms to commit criminal offences.

The matter has been adjourned, with further proceedings expected in the coming weeks.
