President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured four late Ogoni leaders with posthumous national awards nearly 30 years after their execution under General Sani Abacha’s military regime.

The honourees are Chief Edward Kobani, Chief Albert Badey, Chief Samuel Orage, and Chief Theophilus Orage.

Each was conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), one of Nigeria’s top national honours.

The late leaders were part of a vanguard of Ogoni activists who resisted oppression and fought for justice in the Niger Delta.

Alongside renowned writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, they were executed in 1995 by Abacha’s government.

The killings sparked global outrage, triggered international sanctions, and marked one of the darkest chapters in Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

By bestowing the awards, Tinubu signaled recognition of their sacrifices and contributions to the fight for fairness, equality, and democracy.

The move comes amid renewed calls for justice and reconciliation in the Niger Delta, where the Ogoni struggle still symbolizes resistance against environmental degradation and political oppression.

While details of the ceremony remain limited, the gesture has already drawn attention, as it marks a significant acknowledgment of lives lost during Nigeria’s years of military dictatorship.

For many, it also highlights Tinubu’s attempt to align his government with democratic values and historical justice.

Observers note that this recognition could further strengthen ongoing reconciliation efforts between the federal government and Niger Delta communities, many of whom still seek compensation, environmental restoration, and accountability for past injustices.

The memory of the four honoured leaders, alongside Ken Saro-Wiwa and others, remains deeply rooted in Nigeria’s democratic history.

Their sacrifices continue to inspire activists pushing for accountability, environmental protection, and a just society.
