Kalu advocates for comprehensive healthcare reforms in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – Right Honourable Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has urgently called for transformative healthcare reforms in Nigeria. He emphasized that sustained investments and stronger international collaborations are essential, as healthcare underpins national productivity and human dignity.
During a courtesy visit by Dr. Philip Ozuah, President of Montefiore Medicine, USA, Kalu outlined the dire state of Nigeria’s healthcare system. He cited alarming statistics on preventable diseases, maternal mortality, and inadequate access to services, stressing the need for purposeful legislation, increased funding, and structural reforms.
“Health is the one asset that, once lost, cannot be regained,” Kalu declared. He criticized Nigeria’s reliance on medical tourism, which drains over $1.1 billion annually, urging stronger domestic health systems. Furthermore, he highlighted diminishing global health aid, advocating for innovative global-local partnerships to build resilience.
Healthcare as a Personal Mission
Kalu described healthcare reform as a personal mission, particularly for the South East, which suffers from historical neglect. He linked these challenges to his Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Reconciliation (3Rs) agenda, noting that health development remains incomplete.
Through his PISE-P initiative, Kalu has upgraded primary healthcare centers, trained local personnel, and promoted sustainable rural healthcare models. Additionally, he sponsors the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill to drive regional progress. Beyond legislation, he has supplied medical equipment, organized free outreach programs, and advocated for inclusive policies.
“Advancing health access is inseparable from protecting human dignity,” Kalu asserted.
Legislative Priorities and Investments
The 10th National Assembly has prioritized healthcare as central to national security and economic growth. Kalu referenced WHO data, noting that healthcare investments yield fourfold productivity gains. He praised President Tinubu’s ₦1.33 trillion health budget allocation but stressed that sustainable change requires effective systems and partnerships.
Key achievements include expanding the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, reforming medical training, promoting local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and modernizing the National Assembly Clinic.
Partnerships for Innovation
Kalu commended Dr. Ozuah’s journey from Nigeria to global healthcare leadership, calling it proof of Nigerian potential. “Dr. Ozuah’s story affirms the value of partnerships,” he said, emphasizing their role in innovation and capacity-building.
Kalu reiterated his commitment to equitable healthcare access, calling it both a policy priority and a moral imperative. His advocacy serves as a clarion call for collective action to address Nigeria’s pressing healthcare challenges.
