The Executive Director of Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER), Mr. Frank Tietie, has asked the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), to take immediate action and investigate the serious allegations of bribery and corruption levelled against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), as contained in the recently circulated audio recording.

The allegations sprung up following release of an audio recording by Mr. Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan.

The viral audio, which involves the Nigerian cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, drew the attention of CASER.

Mr. Tietie, on behalf of CASER, petitioned ICPC to investigate allegations of bribery and corruption involving EFCC and NCoS, as exposed in a recent audio recording.

The Executive Director of CASER alleged that the bribery and corruption claims are supported by a viral audio recording, featuring a conversation involving Bobrisky, EFCC and NCoS officials.

The viral audio recording alleged that Bobrisky offered a bribe of fifteen million Naira (N15,000,000) to EFCC officials to dismiss money laundering charges against him.

Additionally, the recording claims that Bobrisky bribed the NCoS officials to receive VIP treatment while in prison, including an unauthorized lodging in a private apartment outside the correctional facility.

The human rights activist argued that the ICPC is the best agency to investigate the issues raised in the viral audio recording.

This, he said, is because it has a reputation for being independent, impartial and professional in handling similar matters.

The petition submitted to ICPC by CASER said: “As a civil society organization whose anti-corruption and good governance advocacy relies heavily on the proper administration, it is pertinent for law enforcement agencies, particularly EFCC, to get to the root of the issues raised in the viral audio recording.”

The group’s petition emphasized that Bobrisky’s claim about the audio recording being AI-generated has increased the need for ICPC to utilize its forensic investigative capabilities to uncover the truth.

CASER emphasizes that rescuing our nation’s institutions and governance standards from their current calamitous decline requires a collective effort.

“It is crucial that the investigation into the viral audio recording is thoroughly pursued to the end,” Tietie said.

The group expressed grave concern over VDM’s recent social media disclosures which have shed light on critical aspects of the Nigerian criminal justice system’s functioning.

“The Recent revelations have exposed a disturbing reality, showing a system tainted by secretive bribery, favoritism, obstruction of justice, and blatant corruption, which have compromised the system’s integrity,” noted CASER.

The anti-corruption advocate said he remained uncertain about the investigation being conducted by the EFCC and the NCoS.

This was attached to their failure to prevent and check the reported abuses and misconduct by their officials and agents.

According to the CASER, “the same agencies cannot be entrusted with conducting a just and impartial investigation”.

The crime watchdog expressed skepticism about the House of Representatives attempt to investigate the issues by summoning individuals and agency leaders.

It cited the involvement of criminal elements that undermine the credibility of such an investigation.

CASER, therefore, suggested that the House of Representatives hearing may be mere posturing, given the serious criminal implications in the audio recording.

It emphasized that only an impartial anti-corruption agency like ICPC, renowned for its diligence and adherence to legal and professional standards, can effectively address these concerns.

Tietie stressed that the Nigerian anti-corruption agency, considered the most pertinent at this time of our national life, is to make efforts to check the pervasive trend of bribery and corruption in the nation.
