A Nigerian serving in the United States military has shared a thought-provoking experience from a special military training in the US, saying a conversation with fellow participants left him reflecting deeply on what citizens should be able to expect from their home countries.
According to the serviceman, most of the participants at the training were immigrants who had come to the United States from different parts of the world, including Germany, Italy, Rwanda and South Africa.
He explained that during one of their conversations, the participants began discussing the opportunities and benefits they had experienced in their respective countries before eventually relocating to the United States.
The German participant reportedly highlighted access to healthcare and education, describing benefits he said were available to citizens in Germany.
The Rwandan participant, according to the Nigerian serviceman, spoke about the country’s economic progress and how it had contributed to the growth of his business back home.
An Italian participant reportedly shared a personal experience about starting a family, explaining that having children did not leave him burdened with the kind of healthcare expenses he associated with the experience in some other countries.
The South African participant also reportedly spoke about receiving government-backed financial assistance that helped him establish a business.
Then came the Nigerian serviceman’s turn.
He said the moment became unexpectedly uncomfortable when he tried to identify the benefits and opportunities he had personally enjoyed as a Nigerian while living in Nigeria.
According to his account, he suddenly realized that he struggled to mention even one benefit that stood out to him.
The experience reportedly left him deeply reflective about the relationship between citizens and their governments, particularly the responsibilities countries have toward the people they represent.
His story has since raised a broader question about what citizens should reasonably expect from their governments beyond political leadership.
For many people, issues such as affordable healthcare, accessible education, economic opportunities, business support and social protection are central to the idea of a functioning society.
The serviceman’s experience also highlights how migration can change people’s perspectives. Living alongside people from different countries can expose individuals to different approaches to public services, economic development and government support.
His account was ultimately less about comparing countries and more about the personal realization he said the conversation triggered: the desire for citizens to feel that their country provides meaningful opportunities and support that can improve their quality of life.
