(DDM) — Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has called on the Abia State government to immortalise the late evangelist, Uma Ukpai, in recognition of his enduring contributions to Christianity and social development.

Speaking during a commemorative event in Umuahia, Kalu described Ukpai as a visionary cleric whose ministry transcended religious boundaries, impacting countless lives across Nigeria and beyond.

According to Kalu, the late evangelist dedicated his life to spiritual leadership, humanitarian service, and the promotion of moral values. “Uma Ukpai was a beacon of hope to many. His teachings, outreaches, and philanthropic efforts positively transformed communities, giving spiritual and material support to the vulnerable,” he said.

Kalu further urged the state government to establish lasting memorials, such as naming streets, institutions, or scholarship programs after Ukpai, to preserve his legacy for future generations. He emphasized that immortalising figures of such stature not only honours their memory but also inspires youth to pursue lives of service and faith.

The former Abia governor highlighted Ukpai’s significant role in evangelism, noting that his crusades and missionary activities brought together people from diverse backgrounds, fostering unity and moral discipline. He stressed that the evangelist’s influence extended beyond religious circles, contributing to community development projects, educational initiatives, and poverty alleviation efforts.

Relatives, colleagues, and community leaders who attended the event commended Kalu for advocating for formal recognition of Ukpai’s contributions. They echoed his call for permanent tributes that would enshrine the evangelist’s name in the state’s history.

Observers noted that the call comes at a critical moment when Abia State is seeking to highlight its cultural and religious icons to promote tourism, education, and moral leadership. Advocates believe that formally immortalising Uma Ukpai could serve as a model for honouring other distinguished citizens who have positively shaped the state and the nation.

Kalu also urged faith-based organizations and private institutions to collaborate with the government in establishing lasting monuments, scholarships, and community centers in Ukpai’s name. He argued that such efforts would ensure the evangelist’s mission and values continue to benefit future generations.

The event concluded with prayers and tributes, as attendees reflected on Ukpai’s remarkable life and legacy. Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to working with Abia State authorities to see that the late cleric’s contributions are formally recognised and celebrated.
