Kanayo O. Kanayo Calls for Police Reforms After Ghana Trip

Nollywood veteran Kanayo O. Kanayo has called for adjustments to policing practices in Nigeria after spending 10 days filming in Ghana, where he observed differences in how police checkpoints operate.

The actor shared his observations following his return to Nigeria, noting that checkpoints in Ghana are largely positioned in strategic locations, unlike what he described as the numerous checkpoints encountered on Nigerian roads.

Kanayo expressed concern that the frequency of police checkpoints in Nigeria, alongside the conduct of some officers, could create an uncomfortable experience for visitors and potentially embarrass tourists unfamiliar with the country’s policing practices.

“I’m just returning from 10 days of movie shooting in Ghana, and I observed some differences between the Ghana Police and the Nigeria Police. I’m not here to compare, but the Nigeria Police needs some adjustments. I also commend IGP Disu for the reforms he has introduced so far,” the actor said.

He suggested that Nigerian authorities should examine existing policing practices and identify areas requiring improvement, particularly regarding the placement of checkpoints and officers’ interactions with members of the public.

The actor’s comments also drew attention to concerns about how some young Nigerians are treated by law enforcement officers. He questioned the tendency to associate young people driving expensive vehicles with internet fraud, arguing that such assumptions could result in unnecessary suspicion.

Kanayo’s observations come amid ongoing conversations about police accountability, professionalism and the need to improve public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

Despite his criticism, the veteran actor acknowledged the efforts of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, commending him for the reforms introduced since assuming leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

Disu became Inspector-General of Police in February 2026, succeeding Kayode Egbetokun. His leadership has brought renewed attention to discussions surrounding police conduct, operational efficiency and institutional reforms.

Kanayo’s remarks highlight the importance of ensuring that policing practices protect public safety without subjecting innocent citizens and visitors to unnecessary scrutiny or intimidation.

While police checkpoints serve legitimate security purposes, their placement, frequency and manner of operation can influence how motorists and members of the public perceive law enforcement.

The actor’s experience in Ghana has therefore reignited a familiar debate about how Nigeria can strengthen security operations while promoting professionalism, respect for citizens and a more welcoming environment for international visitors.

His commendation of the police chief alongside his criticism also reflects a call for continued improvement rather than an outright dismissal of the ongoing reform efforts.

As discussions about police reform continue, Kanayo’s observations have added his voice to calls for a police force that prioritises security, accountability and respectful engagement with the public.
