Harry Kane edged Kylian Mbappé by fewer than 41 points to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with organisers confirming that the race for football’s most prestigious individual award was decided by an exceptionally narrow margin.
Vincent Garcia, editor-in-chief of France Football, revealed the closeness of the contest following Monday’s ceremony in London, where the Bayern Munich striker was crowned the world’s best men’s footballer ahead of Real Madrid forward Mbappé and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal.
According to Garcia, the difference between Kane and Mbappé was smaller than the 41-point margin that separated Manchester City midfielder Rodri and Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior in the 2024 edition.
Although the exact number of points received by the two leading candidates had not been disclosed in the initial report, Garcia indicated that the outcome was decided by only a handful of votes.
Mbappé reportedly led the race for a significant period during the voting process before Kane gained ground and eventually secured the award.
The close contest underlined the strength of the competition between the two forwards following their impressive performances during the 2025/26 campaign.
Kane enjoyed a prolific season with Bayern Munich, scoring 73 goals for club and country across all competitions, according to UEFA. His performances helped Bayern retain their Bundesliga title and complete a domestic treble.
The England captain also finished as the Bundesliga’s leading scorer for the third consecutive season and scored 14 goals in the Champions League as Bayern reached the semi-finals.
His individual achievements and contribution to Bayern’s success strengthened his case for the award, making him the first Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.
Mbappé, meanwhile, finished second after another productive campaign with Real Madrid. The France international had remained a leading contender throughout the voting period but ultimately missed out on the award.
Yamal completed the top three, continuing his rise among the leading young players in world football.
The narrow result adds another chapter to the Ballon d’Or’s history of closely contested finishes.
In 2019, Lionel Messi defeated Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk by just seven points, collecting 686 points against the Dutchman’s 679.
Rodri’s 2024 victory over Vinícius Júnior was also decided by a relatively small margin, with the Spanish midfielder receiving 1,170 points against the Brazilian’s 1,129.
Some earlier editions were even closer. In 1966, England legend Bobby Charlton defeated Portugal’s Eusébio by one point, while Matthias Sammer edged Brazilian forward Ronaldo by the same margin in 1996.
By contrast, Ousmane Dembélé won the 2025 Ballon d’Or by a much wider margin, finishing 321 points ahead of Yamal.
The Ballon d’Or is determined by an international jury of journalists representing countries selected according to the FIFA men’s world rankings. Each voter selects 10 players from the nominees, awarding points on a descending scale from 15 points for their first choice to one point for their tenth.
The voting criteria include individual performances, team achievements, titles won, and a player’s class and fair play.
While the exact 2026 voting totals were not available in the initial announcement, organisers indicated that the final result reflected an extremely tight contest between Kane and Mbappé.
Kane’s triumph marks a significant milestone for English football and confirms his place among the game’s most celebrated individual award winners.
