Kano allocates N8 billion for Ramadan feeding programme
DDM News

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has revealed that his administration has set aside N8 billion for this year’s Ramadan feeding programme.
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), he made this known during the official distribution of 1,250 cartons of dates donated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The event took place at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, on Friday.
A statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, on Saturday confirmed this.
Governor Yusuf, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Farouk Ibrahim, expressed appreciation to Saudi Arabia’s Consul-General in Kano, Khalil Adamawi, for the donation.
He noted that this was the fourth consecutive year the state had received such humanitarian support from the Saudi government.
He stated that the donation arrived at a crucial time, as the government is intensifying efforts to provide food items to vulnerable residents.
The economic challenges facing Nigerians, he said, have made it even more necessary for the government to ensure the well-being of the less privileged during Ramadan.
Kano’s growing population and infrastructure burden
Yusuf emphasized that Kano remains the most peaceful state in northern Nigeria, making it a preferred destination for migrants from various parts of the country.
This, he explained, has put additional pressure on the government, particularly in the areas of healthcare and infrastructure.
“Your Excellency, this year, Ramadan is coming at a very difficult time when Kano State is the only inland of peace in northern Nigeria.
The pressure on the government, the people, and infrastructure is enormous,” he said.
Appeal for Saudi investment in healthcare
The governor also used the opportunity to appeal to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to support Kano in addressing its health challenges.
He specifically requested the construction of a psychiatric hospital and the renovation of the Displaced Children’s Camp in the state.
He explained that these projects would go a long way in improving the lives of the vulnerable population.
Strengthening bilateral relations
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed Kano’s commitment to strengthening its long-standing relationship with Saudi Arabia.
He assured that the government would continue to work closely with the kingdom for the benefit of both parties.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Kibiya, praised Saudi Arabia for its humanitarian efforts worldwide.
He described the kingdom as a “strong pillar” in the global fight against poverty and suffering.
In his remarks, Saudi Arabia’s Consul-General, Ahmad Adamawi, reiterated the kingdom’s commitment to supporting Kano State.
He commended Governor Yusuf’s administration for implementing key development projects, particularly in the health, education, and infrastructure sectors.
Distribution of dates to beneficiaries
At the event, cartons of dates were handed over to associations of persons with disabilities, Islamic clerics, and other groups.
The initiative, according to officials, aims to support fasting Muslims during Ramadan.
Call for reduction of food prices
Meanwhile, Governor Yusuf has urged business owners to consider reducing the prices of essential commodities.
This, he explained, would enable Muslims to maximize the Ramadan period both physically and spiritually.
The governor made this appeal in his Ramadan message to the people of Kano State.
He called on residents to demonstrate kindness and generosity, particularly towards family members and the vulnerable in society.
He further encouraged citizens to uphold peaceful coexistence and dedicate their time to worship and prayers, seeking divine blessings for the state.
