Bandits who abducted worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke Isegun, in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State have demanded ₦100 million for each victim. At least 30 worshippers were taken during Tuesday’s attack on the church in Eruku. The gunmen reportedly operated for close to an hour and killed three people before escaping with their hostages. A community leader and the Olori Eta of Eruku, Chief Olusegun Olukotun, confirmed that relatives of the abducted victims had begun receiving ransom calls. Four members of his family were among those kidnapped. Olukotun, who was in the church with five of his relatives when the gunmen struck, said he and one of his wards managed to escape through a window at about 6:06 p.m. “From what we gathered from the kidnappers’ camp, they have grouped the victims according to family ties and are now calling our people through each group. Some families have received calls demanding ₦100 million per person. I have not received any call concerning my own people yet,” he said. The pastor of the church, Abiodun Bamidele, stated that between 30 and 35 members were abducted. “We were holding a Thanksgiving service for 18 people who were kidnapped here three weeks ago and rescued. That was when the bandits came again and took almost 30 to 35 people,” he said. The incident triggered protests by youths in Eruku, who blocked the Ilorin–Kabba highway in anger over what they described as a lack of response from security operatives posted to the community. A youth leader, Peter Adesiyan, accused the police of failing the community despite the assistance residents had provided in building facilities for the local division. Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has requested additional and urgent security deployment to curb the renewed wave of attacks affecting border communities. The assault on the Eruku church adds to a rising spate of security incidents in Kwara, coming amid widespread concern over growing bandit activities in the region.
