(DDM) – The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, has issued a comprehensive safety advisory to residents of the state, warning against preventable fire disasters during the ongoing festive period when homes, markets, and public spaces are more vulnerable to fire outbreaks.
Prince Falade urged residents to exercise heightened caution in their daily activities, particularly in the use of electrical appliances, cooking equipment, and gas cylinders, noting that the festive season often comes with increased power usage, cooking activities, and social gatherings that raise fire risks.
According to the director, careless handling of electrical appliances remains one of the leading causes of fire incidents across the state, especially during festive celebrations when decorations, lighting, and household electronics are used simultaneously for long hours.
He advised residents to avoid overloading power sockets, to switch off electrical appliances when not in use, and to ensure that faulty wiring is repaired by qualified technicians to prevent sparks and electrical surges.
Prince Falade also emphasized the importance of proper handling and storage of gas cylinders, warning that leaks from poorly maintained cylinders and hoses can easily trigger explosions and fires, particularly in enclosed spaces such as kitchens and small shops.
He encouraged residents to regularly check their gas equipment for leaks, ensure cylinders are kept in well-ventilated areas, and avoid placing them near open flames or heat sources.
The director further cautioned against leaving cooking unattended, stressing that many domestic fire outbreaks occur when pots are left on burners or open flames while occupants are distracted by social activities or visitors.
He appealed to traders and business owners, especially those operating in crowded markets and commercial areas, to adhere strictly to fire safety regulations, including the proper placement of cooking stoves and generators away from flammable materials.
Prince Falade explained that the festive period traditionally records a spike in fire emergencies nationwide due to increased commercial activities, fireworks usage, careless disposal of combustible materials, and the pressure on electrical infrastructure.
He reassured residents that the Kwara State Fire Service remains on high alert throughout the festive season, with personnel strategically positioned across the state to respond swiftly to distress calls and emergencies.
The director also called on community leaders, landlords, and household heads to educate family members and tenants on basic fire safety measures, noting that prevention remains the most effective approach to reducing fire-related losses.
He urged residents to promptly report any fire outbreak or suspected hazards to the nearest fire service station, stressing that early intervention can significantly reduce damage to lives and property.
Prince Falade added that cooperation between the public and emergency responders is crucial, especially during peak festive periods when response time can be affected by traffic congestion and increased demand for emergency services.
