A Nigerian woman has criticized Nigerians living abroad who took to the streets to celebrate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day, arguing that their celebrations ignored the harsh realities Nigerians back home continue to face.

Reacting to videos of Nigerians in the diaspora marking the October 1 celebration, she questioned whether those abroad could claim to love Nigeria more than citizens who remain in the country and experience its challenges firsthand.

She said she became particularly angry watching the celebrations because of the insecurity Nigerians were dealing with at home on the same day.

“Some Nigerians abroad need to learn how to read the room. Some of you don’t understand what Nigerians back home are going through. Did you people think you love Nigeria more than those of us in Nigeria?” she said.

The woman further pointed to the reported abduction of 20 NYSC members as an example of the painful reality facing Nigerians at home.

“I got so angry watching videos of Nigerians abroad celebrating Independence Day, because on that same day, 20 NYSC members were kidnapped,” she added.

Her comments have sparked debate over how Nigerians in the diaspora should express their patriotism while people living in the country continue to deal with insecurity, economic hardship and other challenges.

While Independence Day celebrations abroad are often seen as a way for Nigerians to preserve their culture and national identity, her remarks highlight the growing divide between the experience of Nigerians living overseas and those confronting the country’s problems on a daily basis.
