Lagos announces Public-Private sector exchange programme launch

To enhance public sector efficiency, innovation, and service delivery, Lagos State launched a Public-Private Sector Exchange Programme.

By bridging public-private gaps in ethics and strategies, the initiative equips civil servants to drive reforms and foster results.

At the launch, Commissioner Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo called the program transformative for building a dynamic, innovative civil service.

He declared, “This initiative aligns public sector practices with private-sector efficiency and innovation to accelerate national progress.”

Moreover, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that governance remains competitive in a rapidly evolving world.

The exchange programme aims to provide civil servants with the skills, mindset, and exposure needed to adapt to modern challenges and lead change effectively.

“Through this initiative, we are dispelling outdated stereotypes about the public service.

He affirmed that civil servants will actively adapt to competitive environments and return with expertise to strengthen governance.

Furthermore, these insights will directly improve nationwide service delivery, fostering more effective public administration systems.

A Vision for Workforce Development

The programme embeds civil servants in private-sector organizations for three months. This initiative aims to align public sector practices with global standards.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Olubusola Abidakun, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Establishments and Training, shared that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu conceptualized the initiative in 2021.

However, it required meticulous planning before its implementation could begin.

She explained that the programme is tailored to equip participants with skills relevant to the demands of the 21st-century workplace.

“The Governor’s vision for this initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to continuous workforce development through strategic partnerships and innovative learning opportunities,” Abidakun said.

Private Sector Collaboration

The Chief Executive Officer of Kinder Consulting Limited, Patricia Akinlotan, also spoke on the potential impact of the programme.

Civil servants will gain hands-on industry experience, access best practices, and build valuable professional networks through placements in private-sector organizations.

“This exchange program uniquely enables participants to broaden their perspectives and return with actionable insights that can enhance public service delivery,” Akinlotan remarked.

Commitment to Excellence

In his keynote address, Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, underscored the need for dedication and passion in public service. He expressed confidence in the beneficiaries of the programme, describing them as future leaders of the civil service. “Civil service requires commitment. Those who do not love the job cannot remain in it. I am optimistic that this group of beneficiaries represents the future leaders of our service,” Agoro stated.

He urged participants to uphold discipline, respect seniority, and represent Lagos State with excellence during their placements. “You are the face of the state government. Your conduct and performance will shape the perception of the public service. Make the most of this opportunity and showcase your skills,” he added.

A Pledge from Beneficiaries

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Adeola Ekine expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for initiating such a forward-thinking programme. She assured stakeholders that participants would serve as good ambassadors for the civil service. “We are grateful for this opportunity and promise to change the narrative about civil servants. We will not disappoint,” Ekine said.

Programme Details

Under the exchange programme, each participating civil servant will spend three months working within a designated private-sector organisation. The placements are designed to provide practical experience and exposure to innovative practices that can be adapted to improve governance and service delivery in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development within its workforce. With this initiative, it hopes to create a more dynamic public sector capable of meeting the evolving needs of its citizens while setting new benchmarks for governance in Nigeria.
