LAGOS, Nigeria — Lagos lawmaker Desmond Elliot has opened up about his political career, insisting that he does not steal public funds and highlighting his achievements in the Surulere constituency he represents in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Elliot made the declaration during an interview on Wednesday, where he addressed criticism of his political journey and defended his record in office. The actor-turned-politician, who has served in the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015, said his approach to politics is rooted in service rather than personal enrichment.
“I don’t steal in my kind of politics,” Elliot said. “I am here to serve my people, and I have done my best to ensure that the Surulere constituency gets the representation it deserves. I have nothing to hide, and I challenge anyone with evidence of wrongdoing to come forward.”
The lawmaker cited several achievements during his tenure, including road rehabilitation projects, support for small businesses, educational interventions, and community development programmes in Surulere. He noted that his track record speaks for itself and that he remains committed to improving the lives of his constituents.
Elliot also addressed critics who have questioned his transition from entertainment to politics, noting that his background as an actor and filmmaker has given him a unique perspective on governance and the challenges facing the creative industry. He said he has used his position to advocate for the rights and welfare of artists and entertainers in Lagos.
The lawmaker’s comments come amid growing scrutiny of politicians across Nigeria, with citizens demanding greater transparency and accountability from elected officials. Elliot acknowledged the public’s frustration with political corruption but insisted that not all politicians are dishonest.
“I know there are bad eggs, but I have always been open and transparent with the people of Surulere. They know me, and they can see the work I have done,” he said.
