LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Lagos State Government has empowered 733 widows through a comprehensive skills acquisition and economic support programme, reaffirming its commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable women and promoting self-reliance across the state.
The initiative, implemented by the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, provided participants with vocational training in various trades, including tailoring, catering, hairdressing, and craft-making. Beneficiaries also received startup grants, equipment, and mentorship to enable them to establish sustainable businesses and achieve financial independence.
Speaking at the graduation and empowerment ceremony, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation emphasised that the programme was designed to address the unique challenges faced by widows, many of whom struggle with poverty, social exclusion, and limited access to economic opportunities. The Commissioner noted that empowering widows would not only improve their living standards but also contribute to the state’s broader economic development goals.
“I do not just distribute items; I encourage you to sustain the businesses you are starting. This is not the end; it is the beginning. Therefore, you should make good use of the opportunity given to you by the Governor,” she said, urging beneficiaries to take the training seriously and build on the support provided.
The Commissioner highlighted that the programme aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and poverty reduction. She encouraged beneficiaries to establish cooperative societies to access larger markets and funding opportunities, ensuring the sustainability of their ventures.
The initiative also included financial literacy training to help beneficiaries manage their businesses effectively and plan for long-term sustainability. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the state government for the opportunity, describing the training and support as life-changing.
In addition to the 733 widows, two women who had experienced abuse were supported to start businesses, while three persons with disabilities were also empowered. The initiative was conducted in partnership with the First Bank of Nigeria, which provided financial support.
One beneficiary, Abosede Aleshinloye, who lost her husband, described the programme as a lifeline. “I lost my husband, and I have been struggling. Today, I can stand on my own. I am going to work with the money I have been given; I am going to do my best to be independent,” she said.
Another beneficiary, Oyinlola Ajao, shared that she had been trained and was given raw materials to start a business. “Before now, I was a housewife, but I now have something to fall back on. I will make sure my business grows,” she added.
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to expand the programme to reach more widows and vulnerable women in the coming years, with the goal of creating a sustainable pathway out of poverty for thousands of families across the state. The government has also encouraged private sector organisations to partner with the state in supporting the empowerment of widows and other vulnerable groups.
