Lagos, Nigeria — January 30, 2025— In an effort to enhance traffic discipline and reduce congestion, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has seized 173 vehicles.
This total includes 125 commercial buses and 48 private cars, all due to illegal parking and road obstructions.
This large-scale operation occurred in various well-known traffic trouble spots, such as Idumota, Ijaye Street, and Martins.
“Additionally, Ereko, Nnamdi Azikiwe by Tom Jones, Ebute-Ero, Oyingbo, Ijora, Adeniji Adele, and Iddo participated.”
The enforcement initiative highlights LASTMA’s strong commitment to addressing persistent traffic issues in the metropolis.
Specifically, these problems are intensified by reckless commercial transport operators and private drivers.
Numerous offenders were caught engaging in dangerous maneuvers, including driving against traffic and executing risky reversals to pick up passengers.
These reckless actions have, consequently, led to numerous road accidents and tragic fatalities.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the LASTMA General Manager, oversaw the operation, following directives issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser, Mr. Sola Giwa.
The crackdown specifically targeted unauthorized garages.
These garages have consistently contributed to traffic congestion, creating hardships for commuters and residents.
“This crackdown represents an ongoing and sustained effort to optimize traffic flow in Lagos,” Mr. Bakare-Oki stated.
“The state government remains resolute in enforcing traffic regulations and restoring order on our roads.
Illegal garages and indiscriminate obstructions caused by commercial and private vehicles significantly hinder the achievement of smooth mobility in Lagos.
“The operation clearly warns all road users that we will no longer tolerate violations of traffic laws.”
Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized that cultivating a transportation ecosystem is crucial.
Consequently, it must be safe, orderly, and efficient for all road users. This enforcement drive represents a pivotal step toward realizing that vision.
He further noted that notorious congestion zones have been severely impacted.
Specifically, areas like Iddo to Idumota, Oyingbo, Ebute-Ero, and the Adeniji Adele roundabout suffer from illegal parking and makeshift garages.
Consequently, these obstructions hinder vehicular movement and pose significant risks to pedestrian safety.
In response to the operation, local residents and business owners have actively expressed strong support.
They recognize its potential to ease daily commutes while enhancing commercial activities in the area.
LASTMA has committed to extending this enforcement initiative to other locations affected by similar infractions.
The General Manager emphasized the need for motorists to follow traffic regulations and work with authorities, highlighting shared responsibility in traffic order in Lagos.
While the city faces traffic issues, LASTMA’s recent initiatives aim to improve Lagos’ transportation infrastructure, promoting safety and order for all road users.
