Lawyers that frustrate justice will be dealt with – Magu

The Acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu, said the commission will not tolerate lawyers excesses any more.

The commission will no longer tolerate lawyers trying to frustrate the fight against corruption in any form.

He said those lawyers that are fond of filling frivolous applications in our courts in order to derail the course of justice should be prepared to face difficult situations from the commission.

He made this known at a special lecture organized by National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADL) in Lagos.

While presenting paper on “The role of Nigerian lawyers in the fight against corruption”, He frowns at the negative role played by some lawyers whom he termed as “rogue elements” in frustrating the fight against corruption.

He noted that some legal practitioners have been assisting the agencies in their onerous duty. “your direct confrontation of the corruption monster through the instrumentality of the law. However in the course of confronting the monster, we constantly run up against a gang of rogue elements who are not only frustrating the work that we are doing, but also give a terrible name to the bar and bench”.

Continuing he reiterated, “under my watch, Economic and Financial Crime Commission Will come to the aid of short changed Nigerians and where there is impunity, EFCC will intervene. We have partnerships with lawyers whose credibility can be vouched for, but we will not stay idle and watch Nigerians being short changed” 

It is believed that some lawyers are in the habit of aiding and abetting crime, by filling injunction after injunction, in order to frustrate the process, thereby hindering the course of justice.

National Association of Democratic Lawyers is an organization of lawyers, eager to promote the course of justice in Nigeria.
